In classical Indian Buddhism, three vehicle schemas were devised to classify the diversity of Buddhist thought and practice as they evolved over time. It has been nearly 1500 years since the emergence of the last “supreme vehicle,” also known as Vajrayana, but AI may now spark a profoundly innovative and technologically advanced Buddhism – a truly modern fourth vehicle.
How might AI – perhaps the most revolutionary and dangerous technology since the atom bomb – transform Buddhism? This three-part series will contemplate AI’s potential impact by focusing each of its talks on one of Buddhism’s three jewels:
Buddha – consciousness, liberation and awakening, and its embodiment as our teachers
Dharma – knowledge, its transmission, and the methodology of the path
Sangha – ethics and interactions between the embodied, virtual and bot community
Whether you’re new to AI, seek regular meditation instruction from ChatGPT, or are building out your own custom LLM, this series will offer much thought-provoking discussion about the future of Buddhism, humanity, and waking up.
Bio: Â Karunika Dan Hirshberg, PhD is an associate teaching professor of Tibetan, Buddhist and contemplative studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. A long-time student of Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, he has been studying and practicing Buddhism for 30 years.
