How is the awakened and awakening heart depicted? How can the practices of looking at and creating buddhist art be a support on our path to awakening?

Stephanie will explore these questions using Buddhist Visual Literacy, a practice that joins art, clear seeing, and symbolism with the Buddhist path. Over the course of this weekend we’ll trace the development of how compassion appears in Tibetan Buddhist art and the practices involved with that. We’ll touch into the underlying sacred proportions and principles associated with the well-known and widely practiced embodiments of compassion starting with Shakyamuni Buddha and moving to Tara and Avalokiteshvara.

This workshop combines visual presentations with hands-on drawing explorations. Artistic talent is not a prerequisite. All that’s needed is openness and curiosity towards the wisdom of the awakened heart through hands on exploration of Buddhist art.
